Game 1: Rays 3 Red Sox 5 (0-1)

Pretty much sums up how we all feel.

Pretty much sums up how we all feel.

I missed the first half of the game since I couldn’t get out of class so excuse the minimal details.

Pre-game Review: We said to look for Matt Joyce to see how he does, and he went 0-4 with two strikeouts. Not a good start. We also predicted the running game to open up. They picked up three steals, two coming on the double steal in the eighth which paid off on the Longoria single.

What Went Right: The defense showed up today, Pena had a great play and C.C. turned what could of been a costly mistake into an out. The bullpen newcomers threw 2.2 of scoreless ball and allowed only one man to reach.

What Went Wrong: Too many strikeouts for the offense, including the Golden Sombrero (four) for Carlos Pena. Beckett was healthy and had his stuff working so on days like that, you hope to just put the ball in play somewhere. Shields continues his losing ways at Fenway. Usually the story with him is that he has one bad inning and shuts it down after that, and the first looked to be that inning. However he struggled with his control again in the third and could not make it out of the sixth.

What’s Next: Game two of the series will pit two excellent lefties against each other with Scott Kazmir facing Jon Lester. Kazmir will look to see if he can continue his success pitching in Boston. The Rays will need to do a better job stringing hits together and will need to work the count better if they want to post their first win of 2009.

One Response to Game 1: Rays 3 Red Sox 5 (0-1)

  1. Ryan Portilla says:

Tough loss for the Rays; I’m already hearing crap from Sox fans. Hopefully we can take the next 2 and start the season with a division series win!
